Sonja Moonear
From classical training to Technics and machines, Sonja Moonear has built a career spanning over two decades as a DJ and producer with a reputation for discerning record selection and a flair for funky leaning techno, trippy house and high-grade beats. The Swiss native cut her teeth in the Geneva squat scene of the mid 90s before becoming a resident at Weetamix, the city’s key club for the subsequent blossoming days of electronic culture. She rapidly connected with the so-called minimal scene that opened onto the Perlon label and tight knit family assiociated with it. Following multiple collaborations with fellow international artists, she co-founded Junction SM, a recording project and improvised hybrid live and DJ act alongside Dandy Jack. Playing clubs and festivals worldwide and participating in various projects, she made her mark on the scene, got hired by an international agency and restarted the vinyl-only imprint Ruta5. Still not content, she started organising events, from the late Kiss me! Festival to the more recent Cabaret fantastique events. Collector and DJ of sublime electronic music whose spiritual home is Club Der Visionaere and who’s founding fathers are German master Zip and Chilean mentor Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear now ranks among dance music's most in-demand selectors, continually pushing the envelope of her own rhythmic, versatile and unprecedented style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal, always bridged by subtle transitions that never sound rushed or disjointed. After a few releases on cult labels such as Karat and Perlon, Sonja also produces for the television, working as a sound designer for the Swiss national channel RTS, where she is responsible for the News title and their global sound identity. Sonja Moonear is one of 5 protagonists depicted in Romuald Karmakar’s last documentary « If I think of Germany at night » which premiered at the 2017 Berlinale. In 2023 she won the Swiss Prize for Music, a high distinction awarded by the Federal Jury of Swiss Culture. A regular at institutions such as CDV, fabric, Sunwaves, Cocoon Ibiza, Time Warp or Houghton, Sonja has been supplying notable sets at every club and festival that matters. She is known for her empathetic connection with the crowd and a profound and joyful understanding of music and motion.
